A Gypsy Kind of Day

Which of course includes me nearly falling off the deck railing! On the bright side Life is never dull!

 Outfit specs {I don’t know what else to call it…any ideas?}

Gypsy Skirt: Made by me. {one of my favorite skirts and also the first one I drafted myself from scratch!}

White button up sleeveless top: borrowed from my Mother’s closet

Blue stripped shirt: hand me down from a cousin, turned into a cardigan { a month-ish ago} and then refashioned into a faux wrap shirt by me. {this morning in fact}

 O God beyond all praising, we worship You today and sing the love amazing that songs cannot repay;

for we can only wonder at every gift You send, at blessings without number and mercies without end:

we lift our hearts before You and wait upon Your Word, we honour and adore You, our great and mighty Lord.

Beans and Tortillas are a way of life!

At least they are if they’re homemade! {AND you’re from New Mexico!}

 

 

 

 

 

 

As many of you know I’m taking care of my friends house and some very large dogs for a little while, My menu isn’t very original if I only have myself over for supper so I have had beans for supper most nights since being here.

Here is the thing, I only really like beans made my Great-Grandmother Aker’s way…so that’s what I’ve been doing!

Grandmother Aker is one of the few Grandparents that I am actually close to and who I have spent a goodly-ish bit of time with and one of our favorite things to do together is {you guessed it} cook!

We neither one of us usually uses a recipe and I learned how to make beans and tortillas by helping/watching her…so here you go!

G.G. Aker’s beans:

pinto beans sorted and rinsed

{put your beans in a pot with a lid, cover with water and boil for one hour. Remover from heat, drain and rinse then put the beans back in the pot with water to cover}

Add:

tomato paste or sauce

butter or a bit of bacon

oregano

basil

lemon pepper {my addition}

garlic

                                                                                                                       chopped onion

salt

thyme

 

simmer until a bean tested is tender and serve with a small dollop of butter {add more water throughout the cooking time if needed, they taste really bad burned!}

As you can see this is really more of a method than a recipe and that’s the fun of it!

 

Tortillas:

2 Cups flour

1 1/2 tsp baking powder

salt

2 tsp butter, lard or tallow

3/4 Cup of warm water or milk

 

mix together all dry ingredients while you’re letting the oil melt in the water/milk. Add liquid to the dry and mix until a soft dough forms, cover and let rest for 30 minutes.

with your hands pull off small bits {or large depending on how big you want your tortillas to be} and you can either roll them with a rolling pin or just shape them with your hands and cook them  in a dry skillet {no grease is needed} until a very light brown on both sides.

 

The BEST way to eat these is fresh, with butter, salt and some fresh ground black pepper!

 

Mango Salad Thing:

So I made this up the other night and it was good!

1 Mango

some cinnamon pickled beet

some bell pepper diced real small

fresh mint

fresh grated nutmeg

fresh ground black pepper

 

cut everything up, mix it all together and serve!

A High jacked Photoshoot

Greetings on this fine blessed day which the LORD has made!

So as afore mentioned, I am trying to figure out self-portrait taking and I am also house/dog/cat sitting for some friends. Well the dogs being the sweet furry people that they are insist on “helping” me with in my new endevour….oh well. On the bright side, me being me, I need all the help I can get!

Watch: is a men’s G-shock also a gift from Dad {they don’t make one in a women’s size}

Blue flip-flops: hand me down from my Mom 

I really like Sandia’s eyes!

And because I like to give credit where credit is due!

I got this skirt idea and learned how to sew the front pockets from Olivia and I am really just enthralled with this type of skirt and really, really need to make another one{or two or three}! She is a lovely {and very fashionable} talented young woman of God and you should check her blog out! {if of course you are one of the LADIES who reads my blog, you gentlemen feel free to ignore this post entirely}

and FYI because I miss sharing cooking tips, hints and tricks with ya’ll!The above plant is called, well my folks and I call it wild spinach but my Grandpa Griego calls it “Largas” {I think that’s how it’s spelled} and my Grandma Rosemary calls it something that I can never remember and can’t really pronounce, anyways I don’t know what an East-Coaster would call it…so lets just stick with “wild spinach” okay?

Any-hoo, wild spinach grows, you guessed it, wild! You can find almost anywhere in NM although it seems to like south of Belen best that I know of. Most people see it as a weed because once it finds its way into your yard it WILL take over, but just like dandelions {you’ll get THAT ear {or is it eye?} full at another time!} they are so good for you that you {or at least I} want them to take over! Not only do they have a high iron content but very high levels of omega fatty acids, vitamins and minerals and you can use them just like you would spinach!

They can be a bit of a pain to harvest {the leaves are kind of little} but it really is sssoo worth it. Just take the whole plant strip the leaves off muchlike you would herbs {aka run your hand down the stem in the OPPOSITE direction of their growth and VIOLA} wash, rinse and dry them, then I found that they freeze very well and have them throughout the year!

Wonderful and Wacky Moments of Life

All the glimpses of God’s glory that we are given are definitely wonderful!

Most people think that the new haircut is “Wacky” or maybe I just keep freaking everyone out because without warning last year I went from hip length to chin length and then for the heck of it decided to go just down the back to chin…thats the problem with me always giving myself a haircut {other than the fact that I’m to cheap to go all the way into town and pay someone else to cut it} is the fact that no one knows when I might cut it.

On the bright side this is the shortest you will ever see it and also the last major cut you will ever see {hopefully} because as of 8/1/2012 I am officially growing my hair back out…I wonder how long I can get it this time! hhmmm

It’s always wonderful to get to spend a day hanging out with my Dad!! We drove around in the mountains and realized just how close everything really is in New Mexico…the only time factor is the fact that usually you have to go all the way AROUND a mountain range…when we go riding we just go over them! 😀

 Wacky was the fact that we got really rained on for a bit…until we stopped and put rain gear on…and yup you guessed it ! The rain stopped! {we should’ve tried that sooner!}

 

It was wonderful AND wacky that after my Mom and I peeled, pitted and chopped all of these peaches that we didn’t even make a dent in the peach stash that Grandma sent home with us!

Wacky is these dogs, {no pic of the healer because he would NOT stand still long enough like at all!} they sleep during the day and then don’t let ME sleep at night…I surely love my friends! {in all honesty they’re pretty good dogs really!}

 

Wacky {and a little awkward} is trying to figure out “self-portrait” photography…and then to have the dogs have NO idea what it means and try to lick my face RIGHT when the shutter clicks!

Wonderful is the Sorbetto Top that I made using the free pattern! I am frugal {some call me cheap…it’s all in your perspective} and I don’t buy clothes very often and next to never buy them new and I sew a good bit. So when I found a free pattern download for a loose but not to loose top I was thrilled and I like this shirt very much! It’s a sleeveless top with a front pleat no closures and only 2 alterations to the pattern {which is rare for me}. I added two inches to the length {which you can’t see because I tucked it in today} and I did not add the front darts. {I made one top with the darts and one without, the one without fit me better and I liked it more}

Like I said…self portrates are wacky…and I am not a fashionista…but hey…at least I admit it and have fun along the way!

Indiana Part II

Just hanging out at the laundromat…you know where the “cool” people go! 😀 Noah trying to look tough but failing utterly!

They were telling stories through the window…it was wwaaaayyyy too cute!

It was so fun watching the “laundromat friends” have a good old time just playing and laughing!

trampoline football, yes her brother taught her how and now she’s addicted to football, baseball and sports in general!

Grace absolutely loves the “horsey”

Isn’t she just the sweetest horse EVER!! Yes Dixie is exactly that!

My Dad Kyle’s parents {my Gramps and Jomama} as well as my Uncle Clay and Aunt Emily, all came for a visit while I was in IN! It was so nice to see them all but not quite so easy to get a good picture with all of us!

We just can’t seem to pull off a really good family picture! Oh well…next time!

Pinkie Promise II ~*

Matthew 28:18~20

18  And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me  in heaven and on earth. 19  “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name  of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20  teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always,  even to the end of the age.”

 

 

 

Good Morning! I hope you have had a blessed week so far, God is so good!

There will be a time in the life of every one of us who walks this earth, when we will feel alone and lonely. When we will feel abandoned.

Often times those feelings arise when it seems as though the whole world is either going to crash down around us, or like the entirety of creation has forgotten we exist.

 

 

Deuteronomy  31:6

“Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid or tremble at them, for the LORD  your God is the one who goes with you. He will not fail you or forsake you.”

God has not forgotten you.

Such simple words, yet the truth that they convey is completely life altering if we choose to believe them and apply them to our life.

God will not leave us, we can choose to walk away from Him… but He will not be the one to walk away from us.

God loves each of us to such a degree, that He not only sent His only begotten Son to die in order to pay OUR debt…He also chooses to live within us, walk beside us and pick us up when we fall!

 

 

 

Does that mean that our life should be simple? Without pain..without sacrifice…without loneliness…without struggle?

John 15:20~21

20  “Remember the word that I said to you, `A slave is not greater than his master.’  If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you; if they kept My word, they  will keep yours also. 21  “But all these things they will do to you for My name’s sake, because they do  not know the One who sent Me.

No it doesn’t.

We will still have pain and heartache, persecution is actually PROMISED to those who love Christ and follow after Him. Persecution was and is considered an honor and a high calling given to His people.

Even those who Messiah Yeshua, {Jesus Christ} was closest to were persecuted and then martyred for the sake of the name of Christ.

 

 

Phillip was stoned, Matthew was nailed to the ground and beheaded, Jude was beaten to death, Simon was crucified, Bartholomew was skinned alive and then beheaded…and these were the men that Christ told, “Lo’ I am with you always even to the end of the age.” !

And God meant it!

He is with you when you feel alone.

He is with you when you are teased or bullied at school.

He is with you when you are abused and beaten.

He is with you when you are in prison.

He is with you when you are being killed for your faith.

 

 

 

No matter what you go through, He goes through it with you, He weeps with you, He bleeds with you, He prays with you…and He will comfort you if you will only turn to Him trust Him and follow Him no matter where He leads. Knowing full well that if He leads you down a path that He will also give you the strength to walk that path to His glory and your good.

Psalms  37:28

For the LORD loves justice And does not forsake His godly ones; They are  preserved forever, But the descendants of the wicked will be cut off.

 

 

 

This weeks challenge:

Remember that God IS with you..He promised it in His Word and He cannot lie!

If God said it He meant it!

Hebrews  13:5

Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content  with what you have; for He Himself has said, “I WILL NEVER DESERT YOU, NOR WILL  I EVER FORSAKE YOU,”

I Pinkie Promise ~~ Original Post

For those of you who followed my Mountain Cottage Blog I’m starting up my Pinkie Promise series and in order to get everyone caught up to speed am reposting the two original posts. Welcome to the Pilot Post and may it bring some truth and hope into your life.

 

 

How long did your last “pinkie promise” last? A year, a month, a day…did you forget it as soon as the words were spoken?

We live in a world where promises are made and broken everyday. Look around you and you will see what I mean.

We live in a culture where divorce is at an all time high, it is socially accepted and expected for young single people to have short tern un-committed relationships in which they make promises that they can’t keep. We elect politicians and leaders who’s only seeming qualifications are their ability to look better, cheat sneakier, lie subtler and steal quieter than the other guy

Jobs are lost, kids abandoned and abused…single parents are fighting to do it all on their own and even in the church cynicism and mis-trust happen to be what is on the Sunday program.

Lets face it, we live in a world of broken promises.

Because of the culture that you find yourself in and all the broken hearts that you see scattered on the battle field of life, do you find yourself slipping into the habit of being cynical and skeptical? Do you find yourself wondering if there is anything that anyone says that can ever be trusted?

I know what it’s like to be a cynic…because I am one! I’m always ready for a fight, always ready to defend what I believe and always waiting to be let down. I’m not gonna lie that if we rely entirely on human truth and company to fulfill our hearts desire then we will be let down every single time because none of us is perfect and its foolish for us to expect someone else to fill a place in our lives that only God can fill. Only God can fill it because He created us with a longing, need and a passion that can only be filled by the ONE who made us and knows us better than any.

So you may be wondering, “Ok, where is she going with this?”, the point of this organized rambling is the fact that as God has been working in my life and pointing out all the ways that my nature, who I am and the way I think, are all very contrary to who Christ is and who God wants His children to be. We are called to imitate Christ to such a degree that when the world looks at us, they see Christ and the same is true of when God looks at us, although we are sinful man and there is no good of our own within us, He sees Christ and the blood that was poured out to cover our sins.

There are many aspects of my attitude that don’t line up with what a Christian should be and God has been “holding a mirror to my soul.” so to speak and I am convicted of the wrong thoughts and attitudes that pervade my life. So I am on a journey.

One of the roots of cynicism is the fact that I have a hard time believing people when they say something they claim to be true which includes {much to my dismay and shame} what God tells me in His Word. I have found that I have a hard time believing that all of the promises that God lays down in His Word are real, living, true and eternal. I have decided to go through and study the promises of God, repeat them to myself, write them down, memorize them…sing them! Live and breath the promises of God until they become real to me.

I’m starting with a promise that is really the beginning for me.

Matthew  7:7

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it  will be opened to you.

1 Chronicles  28:9

“As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve Him with  a whole heart and a willing mind; for the LORD searches all hearts, and  understands every intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will let you find  Him; but if you forsake Him, He will reject you forever.

If someone were to ask me what one word describes me at this moment in time I would have to say “SEEKING”. I am seeking. I want to know…

I want to know the truths hidden and woven through Scripture.

I want to know who God is really and truly.

I want to know where I stand when it comes to my faith.

I want to know exactly what God expects of me.

I am seeking answers from Scripture. I may not be some great theologian, and I have no “formal” scripture training. But I am weary and confused by all the “leaders” of Christianity and the dissension among them and the inconsistencies in their teachings. So I will search and seek, pray and petition. I am choosing to make this promise a reality.

Deuteronomy 4:29

“But from there you will seek the LORD your God, and you will find Him if  you search for Him with all your heart and all your soul.”

God says to seek whole heartedly, He also says that God cannot lie. So I guess that means that I am trusting a promise…but then again of all the entities in existence in the universe God IS the only ONE who has been proven faithful. As it is written, “Let God be proved true and every man a liar.”.

Numbers  23:19

“God is not a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of man, that He should  repent; Has He said, and will He not do it? Or has He spoken, and will He not  make it good?

So this weeks “Pinkie Promise Challenge”?

“Seek and you WILL find.

If God said it, God meant it.

Splish~Splash~*

So my family and I went to the lake the other day, it is always fun to watch my parents with their grandkids! They had three of their five with us plus my brother Kevin, his wife and then me. It was super fun and of course we had to get rained on {yes it happens all the time, but we don’t mind because being in the middle of a drought we really need the moisture!}

Happy Fourth of July!~*

Happy Birthday America!!

When in the course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.
